Why does paper give up after about 7 folds?

Fold it in half. Then again. Watch the stack grow.

0 folds

1 layer

0.1 mm thick

Face of the A4 sheet: 297 × 210 mm

Why?

Each fold doubles the thickness and halves the face. After 7 folds an A4 sheet is 128 layers thick and about the size of a stamp, so your hands can't bend it any more. On paper, 42 folds would reach past the Moon.

How Aysel teaches it

  1. Step 1 of 3: Guess first: how thick would the paper be after 10 folds?
